The Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune became India’s 44th and 186th ground overall to host a One-Day International. Pune also became 10th Indian city (and 28th in the world) to have more than one ODI ground (it also has Nehru Stadium). Other Indian cities with more than one ground are Ahmedabad, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore, Mumbai, Nagpur, Rajkot, Vadodara and Visakhapatnam. The 44 grounds in India are by far the most any country has used for hosting One-Day Internationals. England is second with 22 grounds, followed by Australia (17), Pakistan (16) and the West Indies (15).

This match was the 400th day-night One-Day International for Australia. They became the first team to play this many ODIs.

George Bailey became the 13th player to lead Australia against India in ODIs.

George Bailey’s 85 is the second-highest innings by an Australian in his first match as captain against India after Michael Clarke’s 111* at Visakhapatnam in 2010.

Australia’s total of 304 for 8 was their seventh 300-plus total against India in India – most for any visiting side against India. They were earlier at level with Pakistan with six such scores.

Last time Australia beat India in India was on November 8, 2009. Since then they had lost 9 games in a row across different formats (6 Tests, 2 ODIs and 1 T20I) before finally winning one.

The defeat was India’s first after 8 consecutive wins. With this India lost the opportunity to equal their best winning streak in ODIs. They had won 9 on the trot between November 2008 and January 2009.

India have not been able to beat Australia while chasing a victory target of 300 or more. They have lost on all 11 occasions. India’s highest successful chase against Australia remains 292 for five at Visakhapatnam in 2010 (At Hyderabad in 2009 India made 347 only to lose the match by 3 runs).

The defeat was India’s 14th against Australia under MS Dhoni. He now holds the dubious distinction of losing most ODIs as captain against Australia for India. Mohammad Azharuddin had lost 13.

Propelled by Rohit Sharma’s magnificent double-century, India marched to a 153-run win in Kolkata.
